The Club is at the forefront of the growth of golf in Hong Kong and has played an instrumental role in developing and nurturing young golfers for generations.

At a grassroots level, the Club has been especially active in the Sheung Shui and Fanling communities. As part of an ongoing programme to introduce golf to children in the local area, the Club’s golf professionals visit a number of schools to provide complimentary instruction to students as part of each school’s physical education curriculum.

Furthermore, the Club is a supporting partner of the Hong Kong Golf Association’s ‘Golf For Schools’ initiative, which was launched during the 2014 Hong Kong Open. Golf For Schools gives children aged six to 12 the chance to try golf at school through a fun and unique training system called ShortGolf.

For both programmes, the Club provides access to its facilities to those children who have a desire to experience golf at a more advanced level. It is the Club’s hope that through encouragement and increased playing opportunities, these young players can go on to represent Hong Kong on the international stage.

At an elite level, the Club provides free and extensive use of its courses and practice facilities, including the driving range and short game area, to members of both the HKGA’s National Squad and Junior Development Programme.

On the back of this relationship, young Hong Kong golfers have in recent years achieved significant success in prominent international tournaments, both in team and individual formats, and the Club is proud to have played its part in these players’ development.

The calibre of Hong Kong’s young golfers is at an all-time high and the Club looks forward to helping to facilitate the potential of future generations for many years to come

Club Members on the International Stage

The Club has been blessed to count many highly accomplished golfers among its Membership over the years.

Hong Kong’s only victory to date at the Putra Cup – Southeast Asia’s premier amateur golf team event – came in Malaysia in 1961 when the all Hong Kong Golf Club quartet of Hugh Staunton, Bill Leighton, Jock Mackie and Alan Sutcliffe played superbly to capture the title in style.

Dominique Boulet, James Stewart and Derek Fung, who all grew up playing the courses of the Club, went on to become playing professionals on the Asian Tour, while in the 1990s, Roderick Staunton established himself as one of the best young amateurs in the game and won a junior world title.

Doug Williams, who won the 1982 Spanish Amateur, has continued his fine play through to his senior career and has played in two US Senior Opens – considered by many to be the foremost Major on the senior professional circuit, but it is has been the performances of Tiffany Chan which have made the headlines in recent times.

Tiffany, who joined the Club in 2016, is a proven winner, having claimed the World University Golf Championship title in addition to a slew of other amateur titles. In the same year, Tiffany was awarded All-American honours during her junior year at the University of Southern California, which fields one of the strongest women’s teams in college golf, and also won two professional tournaments, including the EFG Hong Kong Ladies Open in a thrilling finale. That victory helped pave her way to the Rio Olympics, on golf’s return to the Summer Games for the first time in a century, where she was only one of two amateurs in the elite field.

Tuen Mun-born Tiffany has since turned professional and has enjoyed a stellar start to her career. After a string of impressive results on the Symetra Tour in the United States in 2017, she is now playing on the biggest stage of them all – the LPGA Tour – after earning her Tour card at the 2018 LPGA Qualifying School.
